“Young Love” by Mystery Jets feat. Laura Marling

For those of you who aren’t familiar with the Missed Connections section of Craig’s List, let me try to explain. A “missed connection,” is “a type of personal advertisement which arises after two people meet but are too shy or otherwise unable to exchange contact details,” (shout out to Wikipedia standing on the shoulders of giants).

Craig’s List offers a place for one person to post their missed connections online so maybe, regardless of how small the odds may be, the “Tall Red Head From Aisle 12 in Stop & Shop” they never traded phone numbers with will see the post, reach out, and reconnect. I’d encourage you to check it out because it gives you an interesting view of humanity.

Mystery Jets have an excellent song called “Young Love,” with Laura Marling, and it’s basically about having a missed connection, and longing to meet up again. To be clear, this song isn’t new, but I heard it for the first time about an hour ago in the shower and decided I needed to post about it immediately.

The song opens up with the rhythm section doing their thing. A fairly intricate bassline with the drums soft and steady. Then, the sharp, angular guitar… William Rees quickly jumps in on vocals. The lyrics of the song are clever and easy to digest. This, along with its bouncy melody make it great for radio. There’s a certain juxtaposition between the harmonizing backing vocals and the instrumentation of the chorus that’s captivating and ensnares the imagination. And then comes Laura Marling on the final verse as Rees’ counterpart. The guitar sits out the verse and gives Marling’s beautiful voice space to breathe. She then joins Rees for a splendid final chorus.
This song so perfectly encapsulates “lovelorn,” I can’t believe it wasn’t somehow worked into an episode of How I Met Your Mother. In any event, it’s here for you now. Listen to it today.
