“Needing” by Figurine

Connecticut’s very own Figurine has a brand new single called “Needing,” and (surprise!) I think it’s great. It’s very intimate, with the narrator (Figurine herself? Perhaps a character?) giving us honest insight into a difficult moment in her relationship.

She tells a story about wanting to escape the responsibilities of adulthood, and being needed… by her family, maybe by people at work. The lyrics paint the picture of an entire person. In some respects, “Needing,” puts @figurinemusic in the role of storyteller and a committed listener can pull out a lot of detail and context.

The character the song develops is especially impressive because of the delivery. It’s slow and feathery, almost slow motion. In spite of the tone of the song, Figurine has a voice that feels kind of like a warm breeze in a meadow on a sunny day. That’s important, because on “Needing,” her voice gets all the attention. She sings over an airy melody; the entire song is light as… air... which creates a WONDERFUL dichotomy between the song and the lyrics. If you were to allow yourself to be lulled into a day dream, you might not even realize the heavy endeavor taking place.

The final line sums things up perfectly, and perhaps hauntingly. “I’m a child in a body full grown.” Many people have probably felt that at some point in their lives, and those moments of self-realization can rattle you to the core. This really is a deep dive into a very personal experience. Find a quiet place, and allow yourself to really experience it.
