Bad, Bad Minds! by Killer Kin
With an opening that sounds like you’re rolling up on some of the most fun and serious trouble of your life, Killer Kin’s Bad, Bad Minds! is the soundtrack to your night of bad decisions.
Imagine hanging around a dingy dive with beer stained pool tables; black leather is encouraged but ultimately optional. If the album were to sit down at said bar, it would order a Miller High Life or a PBR with a shot of the well whiskey. Not for the faint of heart.
The album itself has some intriguing elements. The opening track, “Here Come the Killers/Snake Oil” seems like an announcement to the world that the band has arrived. Lead singer Mattie Lea howls a distorted “Here comes the killers/Here comes the kin,” into the microphone as the song transitions into the Snake Oil portion where the pace quickens over the next two minutes. @killerkinband likes to play with tempo, as the final track “Killer is King” moves from a deliberate pace to manic during the choruses. It serves the band well, as they’re at their best when they are moving towards madness. “Bad, Bad Mind!” the titular track is a 2 minute 30 second sprint into mania. Lea is losing his mind as Chloe Rose, Brendan Toller, and Dan Soto play breakneck guitars and Jason Kyek beats the drums.
Bad, Bad Minds! feels like it knows better, but it’s going to do whatever the fuck it wants to do anyway. It functions in society but is rough around the edges. “Killer is King” brings the album to a measured halt after a binge that constantly flirts with disaster. Definitely a recommended listen for folks that enjoy some pure, grimy punk. Check out Bad, Bad Minds! on Band Camp or Spotify (or your other favorite streaming service, I would imagine). You can also check them out with @therightoffsband at the @oasispub in New London on February 22. It’ll be a night of great Connecticut music. Just be sure to keep some room in your schedule for wild choices.
