Musical Poetry - Noname emerges with “Rainforest”
Good things always come in pairs. Sometimes they are presented as a dynamic duo. Jordan and Pippen. Shaq and Kobe. Peanut butter and jelly. Batman and Robin. Activism and dance music. Well, the latter might not be your typical tandem, but Noname’s latest single, “Rainforest”, is looking to add another twosome to the list.
Since the release of her critically acclaimed sophomore album Room 25, musical offerings have been sparse for one of modern music’s most gifted poets, but “Rainforest” has come at just the right time. Over the last year as a once in a lifetime virus has torn our world apart, there has been a growing awareness to the forces of corrupt politics and economic inequalities that tear it from each end. While these themes are not new to the world, hearing lyrics like “dyin’ on stolen land for a dollar like ain’t that fucked up”, almost feels cathartic over the subtly moving dance beat.
Her soft-spoken words find the perfect home over this jazzy groove that hits this incredible balance of making you want to dance and start a revolution. Her lyrics are poignantly apt with a delivery that bridges the juxtaposing gap between the content of the song and the beat, creating a harmonious melding of two polarizing forces. It is a complexity rife for these turbulent times and might just be the best thing you’ve heard in some time.
In lieu of selling merch to promote her single, you can donate to Noname’s Book Club to support authors of color and help get books into the hands of incarcerated people. “Rainforest” is available via your favorite streaming platform.
