NEW MUSIC: “MAZZA” by slowthai feat. A$AP Rocky

The latest release off slowthai’s upcoming Sophomore album TYRON, “Mazza” is exactly that, madness. Produced in part by himself and frequent collaborator SAMO, “Mazza” combines a woozy, buzzy synth with a deep driving bass, mashing the two juxtaposing sounds together, which somehow find a way to fit in this sonic universe.

Mazza adjective 1. Madness. 2. Crazy situation.  See also Mazzaleen.

It’s as if a drug addled mosquito got a hold of a drum kit, the perfect soundscape for one of the UK’s rising stars. Raps slowthai:

Look how shit changed / Feeling like these drugs made me better than I was / But I never felt love before the drugs

Enlisting A$AP Rocky on the track, the two trade jabs like a couple of wiry welterweights in a title fight. No stranger to diving headfirst into strange waters, the Babushka Boy raps:

pop a model ‘til she waddle, uh, drop her toddler off, damn / light a flame, toss a Molotov / drop it off, then Mozel Tov

The Grammy nominated rapper’s second album TYRON is set to release February 5th of this year. It’s third track on the first disc of the album, which is purported to have two distinct sonic themes to it, with the first having a much harder, possibly more unpredictable vibe to it. If “Mazza” is any sign of things to come, Slowthai should find himself right in his wheelhouse with his second studio album.

The British Invasion continues, but with a 2021 kind of twist.
