CT Rising: New London MC Shemmy
After about 9 months of silence, New London rapper Shemmy is back and his latest single is called “Bleed.” With a rhythmic flow that reflects his growth as an artist, he is a young man on the rise.
Beginning his journey in as an MC in high school, Shemmy put a new focus on music following graduation. It has proved to be a period of growth, with each new release better than the last. He counts A Boogie Wit da Hoodie among his influences, and it comes through in his flow and intonation. Shemmy is very much a rapper of the moment, with obvious appeal to Gen Z listeners, but with potential to reel in more seasoned hip hop fans as well.
On “Bleed” he focuses on a relationship void of trust and engulfed in fear. This has become common place in the digital age where infidelity bubbles under the surface, often unnoticed, until a string of digital evidence unravels. Shemmy’s challenge going forward will be how he grows and develops moving forward. Will he stand still, or will he dip, dodge, and change in the way that another of his idols, Drake, has proven able to do? That said, he does have a nice set of releases. “Bleed” is his strongest work to date, along with “Throw Away,” while “Mistake,” and his track with Mar Finesse “I Thought,” put potential on display. There’s no doubt that he has talent, but how he moves and grows from here is the question.
MCs with less ability have gone on to greater success despite their limitations, while greater rappers have languished and failed to achieve what he already has. Time will tell what side of the fence he falls on, but we’ll be following closely and enjoying the music Shemmy gives us.
